Generative engine optimization (GEO): what it is and how to measure it
Generative engine optimization is the name for trying to be the brand an assistant recommends. Measuring it is a smaller job: ask the buyer's question, and see who was named.
Some people call the measurement GEO as well. On this site the words stay apart. GEO is the category. The AI visibility checker is the measurement. We do not sell GEO retainers, agency work, or a platform that runs while you are away.
What people mean by GEO
A buyer asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or DeepSeek for a shortlist. The answer names a few products and cites a few pages. Generative engine optimization is the work of becoming one of those names: pages that answer the question in plain language, citations from sources the model already trusts, and a way to tell whether it worked.
That work attracts courses, agencies, and hosted platforms. Those are real offers for a team that wants someone else to run the program. They are a different buyer from someone who wants a report this afternoon.
What GEO is not
- Not geographic SEO, and not local SEO. The shared letters in "geo seo" are an accident. A map-pack ranking and a mention in an assistant answer are different systems.
- Not "AI SEO" in the broad sense of using AI to write traditional search pages. Overlap exists. The job here is the assistant's shortlist.
- Not a guarantee. Models change answers. A check tells you what they said this time. It does not promise the next answer will name you.
How to measure it
Pick the questions a buyer asks before they pick a product. Pick the rivals they would accept instead. Send the questions to the models you care about. Score named versus not named, the order the names appeared, and the pages cited.
That is an AI visibility audit. The published version of it, on five brands, used 11 questions and one model with web search. Your run can use the five model families this checker supports. The output is an AI visibility report, not a GEO program.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a neighbor term for the same neighborhood: being the answer, not the blue link. Treat it as category language. The page that does the check is still the checker.
A sentence you can skip until you need the category
If you only needed to know whether ChatGPT recommends your brand, you do not need this page. Run the free AI visibility check. Come back to GEO when someone asks what the category is called.
Questions
What is generative engine optimization?
GEO is the practice of trying to be named when an assistant answers a buyer. It is a category of work: content, citations, and measurement. It is not a rank on a traditional search results page, and it is not local SEO.
Does SeenByLLMs do generative engine optimization?
No. SeenByLLMs measures whether you were named on one run. It does not write the pages, run an agency engagement, or check again on a schedule.
Is geo seo the same thing?
No. "Geo" in GEO means generative, as in generative engines. The same letters are also used for geographic SEO and local SEO. Those are a different job. Do not treat the two queries as one market.
